Miki Magasiva

Born in Lefagaoali’i, Samoa, Miki lives in New Zealand. Starting with award-winning ads in 2003, he now creates spots for major brands worldwide. In 2005, he was chosen as a Breakthrough Young Director for Australasia at AFEST, leading to his first short film, “Rites of Courage.” His second short, “Uso,” was nominated for Best Script at the NZ Television Film Awards and won the Digital Dream Award at HIFF. His short “Sina & Tuna,” part of the “Teine Sa”(2021) TV anthology, won Best Narrative Feature at the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. That year, his work on “The Panthers,” NZ's first drama at TIFF, earned him Best Director at the NZ Television Awards. He collaborated with indigenous filmmakers on “We Are Still Here” (2022), which opened the Sydney International Film Festival, screened at TIFF, and won Best Dramatic Feature at imagineNATIVE. 

His first feature film, Tinā, marked a milestone for Pacific filmmaking in NZ. It is among the Top 5 highest-grossing NZ films ever, surpassing Whale Rider and What We Do in the Shadows, earning over $6.49M in NZ and over $10M globally.
